SAN DIEGO – September 4, 2013 – Qualcomm Incorporated today demonstrated at the Uplinq™ 2013 wireless ecosystem conference its Smart Terrain™ capability for the Qualcomm Vuforia™ platform. Qualcomm Vuforia is a product of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm. Vuforia is an industry-leading software platform that gives apps the ability to see and has powered more than 5,500 apps for Android and iOS devices.
Smart Terrain is a breakthrough vision capability that enables a new level of immersion and interactivity in augmented reality mobile gaming experiences. Apps powered by Vuforia can now allow users to create their own play space and interact with the physical world in ways not experienced before by enabling game physics to apply to real world surfaces and objects. The in-game experience integrates real surfaces and physical objects which game characters can navigate around, enabling them to collide with or jump over other objects or even fall off the edge of a table.
“Vuforia Smart Terrain helps to bring movie-like special effects to mobile gaming in a new way,” said Jay Wright, vice president of product management for Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “It mixes digital game play with the physical world.”
Providing a glimpse into the future of Smart Terrain at Uplinq, Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs demonstrated Smart Terrain with the PrimeSense Capri 3D sensor, which gives digital devices the ability to observe a scene in three dimensions. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Qualcomm to bring the next generation of mobile Augmented Reality gaming to devices,” says PrimeSense CEO Inon Beracha. “Extending the Vuforia platform with the PrimeSense Capri depth sensor, specially designed to be embedded in handheld devices, brings never before seen gaming experiences to life.”
The Vuforia team also collaborated with Behaviour Interactive Inc. on the game shown at Uplinq. Behaviour is a seasoned game studio with a 21 year history of providing leading games to the industry. “Behaviour’s collaboration with industry leader, Qualcomm Technologies, is an amazing opportunity to develop the latest in cutting edge, future thinking products that will revolutionise our industry,” said Rémi Racine, president and executive producer of Behaviour President.
Smart Terrain will be available in Spring 2014 with support for the PrimeSense™ Capri depth sensor. For regular Vuforia updates and for more information, please visit www.vuforia.com.
