Life in Santiago de Chile

Santiago

Santiago de Chile, Behaviour’s Latin side

Santiago de Chile is a city of variety. You like to have a drink in a chic and fancy club and enjoy shopping in design stores? You can! You feel like experiencing the Latin culture? Here it is! Peek at the Barrio Bellavista or visit the Mercado Central and La Vega Central, two very interesting markets. Feel like going hiking to escape the city for a while? No need to go far: the Cerro San Cristobal with its 880 m summit lets you enjoy a bit of nature and a great view of Santiago.

In Santiago, there’s a mixture of European, North American and Latin lifestyles, and many foreigners have settled in the city. It is not uncommon to hear bits and pieces of French, English or German when walking down the streets. Santiago is a great city: natives love it, and non-natives feel at home almost instantly.

Santiago is easily transformed into an incredible Chilean adventure: nice people ready to share the “Chilean barbecues”, lots of festivities to learn about our culture and idiosyncrasies, a Mediterranean climate, amazing scenes from the Atacama Desert, which stretches 1 000 km along the coastal area, to the southern forests. Santiago is also the best place to drink “real wine” and taste amazing local food (seafood, meat, original recipes and a large variety of vegetables and fruits).

What I like about living in Santiago is that we have lots of options. We can be part of the big city and enjoy the beauties of nature by the sea and in the mountains in less than an hour. But what I like most of all is people’s kindness! :)

I came to Santiago in 2009 when I was hired by Behaviour Interactive Santiago (then Wanako Games) as a programmer. I was quite happy to see that Providencia, the area where the studio is located, is very similar to my hometown, Viña del Mar. Streets are lined with trees, and most buildings have nice front yards which gives Providencia a nice green touch. I felt at home right away. Around the main avenues, you can find many stores, restaurants and bars. The sidewalks are usually packed with people during rush hour, but if you walk a few blocks up through smaller streets, you’ll find quiet residential neighbourhoods, with young and elderly people out for a stroll through plazas and parks.

Working at Behaviour Santiago has been a fantastic experience for me, and I enjoy living in Providencia very much. Besides, Viña del Mar and its beaches are only two hours away!

It’s an indisputable truth: when you live in Santiago, you can ski in the mountains in the morning and spend the afternoon sunbathing on the beach. And if you still have energy, how about partying all night?
